Shafali Verma became her vice-captain. Smriti had led India before in short spells. She captained against England in 2019 and against South Africa in 2021. Also led the ODI side against Ireland in January 2025. She has captained RCB since 2023.

Smriti Mandhana Playing Style: What Makes Her Different
Timing defines her game. She is a left-hander with a fluent front-foot style. Her best shots are the cover drive and the lofted drive over extra cover. She rarely looks rushed. Bowlers say facing her feels like a losing fight.
Her range stands out. She can score a 50-ball ODI hundred. She can also score a calm 149 in a Test. In ODIs, she sets the tempo. In T20Is, she has become more aggressive in the last two years. She uses her feet against spin and attacks the powerplay with Shafali. Her unbeaten 47 in Raipur showed that. She moved down the track and threw bowlers off their lengths.
She is also a safe catcher and a sharp captain. Her years leading RCB gave her real experience. The BCCI pointed to that when it picked her.
