The Captaincy Rise
Gill’s rise to captain was quick. In May 2025, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli both retired from Tests within days of each other. The selectors named Gill as the new Test captain. He was 25. He started the job in England, one of the toughest places to lead a young team.
The early results were mixed. India lost the first Test at Headingley, even though Gill scored a hundred. They lost again at Lord’s. Then the team came alive. They won at Edgbaston, drew at Old Trafford, and won at The Oval to level the series 2-2. Gill was the series’ top scorer by a distance. He won over fans and critics alike.
The ODI captaincy came in October 2025. He replaced Rohit Sharma. The first series was in Australia. India lost 1-2. Then came a home Test series against South Africa. India lost 0-2. Gill was injured with a neck problem and missed the second Test. The New Zealand ODI series in January 2026 also ended in a 1-2 loss. Critics asked whether he was ready.
He answered with runs and wins. India won the one-off Test against Afghanistan in June, and Gill scored 126. They won the ODI series against Afghanistan too, with scores of 84* and 154. They lost the ODI series in England 1-2. Then they won the Test series in Sri Lanka 1-0 in August. In September and October, India beat West Indies 2-1 in ODIs. Rohit and Kohli, India’s two most experienced batters, now both play under Gill.

Shubman Gill Playing Style: What Makes Him Different
Gill is a classical batter with modern power. His timing is the first thing people notice. His cover drive and his flick off the pads are among the best in the game. He plays straight and rarely looks rushed.
He plays differently in each phase of an ODI innings. In the first ten overs, his strike rate is about 93. He sees off the new ball. In overs 11 to 40, it climbs to 105. In the last ten overs, it jumps to nearly 159. That shows a batter who can build and then explode.
He is hardest to dislodge at home. He averages 73 in ODIs in India. Overseas, it is 54, which is still strong. His weaker spot has been the outside off stump early in Test innings, where he has been caught or bowled by the new ball. As captain, he is calm and methodical. He backs his bowlers and has stayed close to senior players like Rohit and Kohli.
