The Captaincy Handover

India’s captaincy change played out in October 2026. On 6 October, Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down as captain in all formats. She is 37. She led India to the 2025 World Cup title. Won 30 of her 51 ODIs as captain. But her captaincy had come under pressure. India went out at the league stage of the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup in June. That repeated their 2024 exit.

The BCCI named Smriti as the new captain the same day. She had been vice-captain longer than anyone. The BCCI president said her experience and temperament would help. Shafali Verma became her vice-captain. Smriti had led India before in short spells. She captained against England in 2019 and against South Africa in 2021. Also led the ODI side against Ireland in January 2025. She has captained RCB since 2023.

Her first series came against Zimbabwe at home. India won the second T20I in Raipur by nine wickets. They chased 103 in 8.5 overs. Smriti stayed unbeaten on 47 off 25 balls. She and Shafali shared a 96-run opening stand. That sealed the T20I series 2-0. It was her first series win as full-time captain. Five days later, India won the first ODI in Vadodara by nine wickets. Smriti scored 32. Pratika Rawal made a hundred in the chase.

Smriti Mandhana Playing Style: What Makes Her Different

Timing defines her game. She is a left-hander with a fluent front-foot style. Her best shots are the cover drive and the lofted drive over extra cover. She rarely looks rushed. Bowlers say facing her feels like a losing fight.

Her range stands out. She can score a 50-ball ODI hundred. She can also score a calm 149 in a Test. In ODIs, she sets the tempo. In T20Is, she has become more aggressive in the last two years. She uses her feet against spin and attacks the powerplay with Shafali. Her unbeaten 47 in Raipur showed that. She moved down the track and threw bowlers off their lengths.

She is also a safe catcher and a sharp captain. Her years leading RCB gave her real experience. The BCCI pointed to that when it picked her.

The link gives women’s cricket a visible place in a brand that started with a men’s cricket star. It also shows how far her profile has grown. She is now one of the few Indian women cricketers with a lasting deal on that scale.

Smriti Mandhana’s Legacy in Indian Cricket

Her career now has three chapters. First, she became the best opener in the women’s game. She did it with elegance, not brute force. Second, she helped India win its first World Cup. She was the second-highest scorer in that run. Third, she now leads the team. She holds every major batting record in the women’s game. She does it at 30, with years left.
