Suryakumar Yadav debuted for India at 30. Most players get that chance a decade earlier. He waited, scored heavily in domestic cricket, and then rewrote how Indian batters play T20 cricket. He became the world’s top-ranked T20I batter. Captained India to the 2025 Asia Cup. He then led them to the 2026 T20 World Cup at home. Then his form faded, and the captaincy moved to Shreyas Iyer in June 2026. In October 2026, at 36, he is out of India’s T20I squad and fighting for a way back. Suryakumar played his first T20I on 14 March 2021. He did not bat in that match. In the fourth match he faced his first ball in international cricket and hit it for six. He was the first Indian to open his international batting that way. Virat Kohli praised him afterwards. A year later, he hit his first T20I hundred at Trent Bridge. By October 2022, he had reached No. 1 in the T20I rankings. He kept that spot until June 2024. He rarely played Tests or ODIs. His only Test came in February 2023. He scored eight runs. His World Cup 2023 return was modest: 106 runs in seven innings. His real home was always T20 cricket.

Soon afterwards, his IPL form fell apart too.

The Captaincy Exit Controversy
Suryakumar’s loss of the captaincy played out over a few months. It became a hot debate in Indian cricket. He first led India in November 2023 as a stand-in. When Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is in 2024, the selectors backed him as full-time captain. Hardik Pandya had been the vice-captain and a strong candidate. The management chose Suryakumar anyway. He rewarded them. India did not lose a bilateral series under him. They won the 2025 Asia Cup. They won the 2026 T20 World Cup at home. His record of about 80 percent wins is among the best by any full-member captain.
Then the batting dried up. His lean patch ran from November 2024 to December 2025. A brief revival followed in January 2026. Then IPL 2026 hurt him badly. He made 270 runs at 147.54. He hit just 10 sixes from 183 balls. Also managed only two fifties. In June 2026, the selectors named Shreyas Iyer as T20I captain. They left Suryakumar out of the squads for Ireland, England, and the Asian Games. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar admitted the decision was tough. He pointed to Suryakumar’s struggles with the bat. Other reports described it as a planned changeover for a new two-year cycle. Both views agree on one thing. The results as captain were excellent. The runs as a batter were not.
Suryakumar has not given up on India. In August 2026, he said he was working hard and hoped things would fall into place. A BCCI source said the door remains open.

| 2018 to 2020 | Mumbai Indians | 1,400+ runs; won titles in 2019 and 2020 |

| 2026 | Mumbai Indians | 270 runs at 20.76; stood in as captain for a few games |
Suryakumar’s IPL story has two halves. He started slowly. The first match in 2012 ended with a duck. KKR then gave him a role in 2014. They won the title that year. His return to Mumbai in 2018 changed everything. He became the middle order’s engine. He won two titles in 2019 and 2020. By 2023 he was making hundreds. In 2025 he hit 717 runs, his best IPL season. He then fell away in 2026. He lost the India captaincy that June. Reports in September 2026 said he might leave Mumbai Indians. Other reports said his place for IPL 2027 was settled. Suryakumar turned 36 on 14 September 2026. Many T20 batters play well past that age. His fitness has been a worry, though. Injuries cost him the start of two IPL seasons and played a part in his poor 2026 form. He returned to club cricket in October 2026 after the Ranji snub. Mumbai Cricket Association sources said he missed the pre-season camp. Another report said he had confirmed his availability. The reports do not agree, so treat both with care. Between competitive matches, he even tried baseball at a Mumbai crossover event. India’s next T20I assignments now run under Shreyas Iyer.

Suryakumar Yadav Playing Style: What Made Him Different
Fearlessness defines his batting. He goes after the bowling from the first ball. He does not take time to settle. Plays a huge range of shots on both sides of the wicket. His wrists generate the pace. His scoop over fine leg gave him the nickname Mr. 360. He does not wait for bad balls. He turns good balls into boundaries. Bowlers never found a safe length against him. That template pushed other Indian batters to attack earlier. His fielding was sharp too. In the 2024 World Cup final he took the boundary catch to remove David Miller in the last over. India won by seven runs. Commentators called it one of the greatest catches ever. A short-lived debate followed over whether his foot touched the boundary cushion. The replay views cleared him.

| Income Stream | Detail |
| IPL Salary | ₹16.35 crore for 2026 (Mumbai Indians) |

His IPL price rose from ₹7 million in 2014 to ₹16.35 crore in 2026. That is a big jump in twelve years. It reflects his rise from a fringe player to a franchise anchor. After the 2025 Asia Cup, he donated his full match fees of ₹2.8 million to the Indian Army and the families of the Pahalgam attack victims.
Suryakumar Yadav’s Legacy in Indian Cricket
His career has three chapters so far. First, he waited a decade and arrived as a finished product. He then became the best T20I batter in the world. Second, he led India to a World Cup and an Asia Cup, with a win rate above 80 percent. Third, he now faces a hard road back after losing form and the captaincy. He is 36. He has the numbers, the titles, and the skills to return. Whether selectors give him that chance is the open question. Few batters changed T20 cricket in India as much as he did.
